In order to understand where the mindset of the racist south, you need to have an understating of the ideas of White supremacy and what it is pulled from. The Groups that formed from the ideals of white supremacy. White Supremacy, the idea of a racial group being better than others. The idea was born when the British started expanding westward. One thing that is was a big part of white supremacy is that people were categorized. They were categorized by skin color, head shape, religion, and education. People may think that the ideas of white supremacy did not start with the birth of the US. In reality all of these ideas and ways of life were pulled from theories and facts that at that time were concrindred to be factual. The white south responce to the freed slaves and their rights was to form groups who would scare them and their white supporters. The groups that rose from the ashes of the destroyed south were know as terrorist groups. In response to the new laws the major white supremacist group that formed was the Ku Klux Klan, the KKK were the main group who cause the most pain for the freed black and their supporters. To understand why they did what they did you need to know how they started. They were formed the winter of 1865 by six retired Conferdit shoulders. They form this group in the town of Pulaski, Tennessee, when they were forming they had to decide on what to be called. This is when KKK came to be, the KKK went for the name because of the meanings of the words. Ku Klux was pulled from the greek word of kuklos that has a meaning of circle brotherhood, and klan meaning family. When they first started they were a peaceful group, what they would do is get into their white clothes and walk the street at night and say they were the ghosts of dead confederate soldiers. Thats is why their uniform is the way that it is. There was more than one way to tell if a white southerner was in the KKK. Along with the uniforms they had they also used secret handshakes. The Character of Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter Hester Prynne, a character within The Scarlet Letter, is a prime example of Hawthornes common transformation of individuals within his books. These mutations involve the qualities and attributes of her physical appearance, feminine emotions, and reputation among the townspeople. Throughout the novel, the mentioned elements of Hesters character develop and change several times, providing the reader with better understanding of the influence that the scarlet letter and other characters have on her. In the beginning of the novel, the reader is presented with a physical appearance of Hester that is pleasing to the visual eye. The scarlet letter could also be looked as a quality of Hesters character. This quality defined the views of the townspeople regarding Hester, and in time also changed in meaning. It was at the beginning of the book that the letter embroidered on her bosom only stood for adultery, and the common consensus of the people, in respects to Hesters actions, was this woman has shamed us all and ought to die (50). Beowulf travels to the land of the Danes because he heard there was a demon terrorizing the Danish people. He Is very sure of himself and does not fear Greened. Beowulf Is so confident that he claims, single-handed settle the strife! (Beowulf 16) Beowulf decides to wear no armor and bear no weapons during the fight. However, he is unaware that all weapons have no effect on Greened. HIS excuse for not using weapons Is because Nothing knows of noble fighting, of thrusting and hewing and hacking of shield.
